Description

THis is a quick test of the 3 image formats available on the Nikon D3x. Please note that this is far from scientific and is meant as something more of a quick real world test. If you want scientific tests, DP reviews are full of them. I intend to do somethnig a little better in the near future to further help the associated tutorial To squeeze or not to squeeze .jpg is the question.

All images shot at f10, ISO200 through a Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8 mounted to a D3x. Active D lighting was off and picture control set to standard. The Camera system is fix focused, mounted on a tripod and shot on a delay to minimize camera movement.

Feel free to download and browse this image till your heart is content.
Notice the higher contrast on the TIFF and JPEG images due to the in camera processing, also there is a noticeable fringing in the RAW images that are otherwise missing in the other two formats. Of course this is RAW image data and what you expect when that is what you ask for.
Another point that shocked me was how high quality the Basic JPEG image was despite it being just shy of 5mb against the TIFFs mighty 78mb file. THe NEF's were 49, 29 and 27mb respectively.

In hindsight this image isn't very useful as all it showcases is Adoby photoshops ability to smooth and upscale. You still get an idea of the zoomed in crop but things shouldn't be this smooth!
